Benefits of Band

Over Winter break, the band took a trip to Florida to participate in the Outback Bowl and various band events. While on this trip, at least two of my classmates saw the ocean for the first time in their lives and another flew in an airplane for the first time. Many students got to try grits for the first time. We had the opportunity to be on live television and perform in front of the largest audience we will probably ever perform for. Additionally, we got to be part of the largest mass band in recorded history. The experiences band has given us were once in a lifetime opportunities, and for some students, unlike something they had done or seen before.

This past Martin Luther King Day the whole music department performed at a community event. It was a very powerful experience to be apart of. The band performed a piece that had a speaking part read by a pastor from the South who had been involved in the Civil Rights movement. In middle school, I remember playing a piece to honor a suicide victim at one of our band concerts. Experiences like these are often eye opening for students and can change the perspectives of an entire school.

Band also provides many future opportunities for students. Being apart of band for many years looks great on a college application. Additionally, playing certain instruments can guarantee scholarships. It allows students take leadership positions like drum majors or section leaders.

The funding for the band department allows students to take part in these experiences and have more opportunities. Some students can not afford instruments, which typically cost at least $1,000 and can be upwards of $10,000. Students who could not afford instruments would not be able to participate in band. Many instruments also require reeds which are expensive and always in need of replacement. Also, having better instruments causes the band to have a better sound and be more competitive. Without sufficient funds, participating in marching band could cost students thousands in addition to the costs of their instruments. Sufficient funds are needed to keep the band department affordable for all students.
